Work History
*This occurrence was moved 0.75 km to the southeast in Dec/2010. The new location represents the approximate mid-point of Dynasty Explorations’ zinc-lead soil anomaly.
Staked as Prevo cl 1-42 (Y70635) in Dec/72 by Dynasty Explorations Ltd and transferred to the Selwyn Project (Cyprus Anvil Mines Ltd, Cima Resources Ltd, Precambrian Shield Resources Ltd and Numac Oil and Gas Ltd) which carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1973.
In Dec/72 stakers, staked Nor cl 1-56 (Y71023) to the east while Vestor Explorations Ltd staked UN cl 1-19 (Y71755) to the west. During the same month Golden Gate Exploration staked Kam cl 9-14 (Y70893) and cl 1-8 (Y71485) to the northeast and Bonus Resources Ltd staked Wing cl 17-64 (Y71790) along the northern boundary of the Kam claims. In Mar/73 Vestor Exploration optioned the west half of the Nor claim block (claims 1-13, 20-33 and 40-50) while Mackoo Development Company Ltd optioned the east half (claims 14-19, 34-39 and 51-56). All the claims were explored with geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1973.
The Prevo and Un groups were partially restaked as OP cl 226-257 (YA441) in Aug/76 by Canex Placer Ltd and as Ohno cl 1-24 (YA25700) in Sep/77 by the Itsi Joint Venture (Union Oil Company of Canada Ltd, Aquitaine Company of Canada Ltd and St. Joseph Exploration Ltd), which carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling prior to claim staking and MaxMin EM surveying in 1978.
Restaked as Top cl 1-54 (YB49311) in Jun/94 by Archer, Cathro and Associates (1981) Ltd, which did not carry out any work and allowed the claims to lapse the following year.
Restaked as Pot cl 1-56 (YB92506) in Sep/99 by Expatriate Resources Ltd, which completed a compilation of historic geological mapping and geochemical surveying before allowing the claims to lapse in 2001.
In May/2005 Pacifica Resources Ltd entered into a Letter of Intent to purchase a 100% interest in the neighbouring Howard's Pass property for the sum of $10 000 00 spread over 7 years and a commitment to spend a minimum of $3 500 00.00 in exploration expenditures. The agreement was signed between Pacifica and Placer Dome (CLA) a wholly owned subsidiary of Placer Dome Inc (51% owner) and Cygnus Mines Ltd (49% owner). Pacifica immediately staked 415 Selwyn claims in order to cover open ground in the Howard’s Pass area. The majority of staking occurred at the west end of the property. Selwyn cl 71-185 (YC28057) covers the area surrounding this occurrence and the various historic claim groups. The property agreement between Pacifica Resources and Placer Dome and Cygnus Mines was formally approved in Aug/2005.
Beginning in 2005 Pacifica undertook a multiyear geological mapping and soil and silt sampling program on the Howard’s Pass property. Details of this program have not been publicly released. In 2005, as part of larger property wide (53 drill holes, 8 286.9m) drill program Pacifica drilled a single hole (OPX-014 – 229.51m) approximately 0.5 km east of this occurrence. During 2006 Pacifica completed 191 diamond drill holes (40 096.5 m) on the Howard’s Pass property. One hole (OPX-15 – unknown depth) was collared 1.0 km due northwest of this occurrence while a second hole (OPX-020 – unknown depth) was collared 2.0 km to the northwest.
On January 29, 2007 Pacifica Resources announced a plan of re-organization in which the Howard's Pass project would be spun off to a new company, Selwyn Resources Ltd and the company's remaining properties would be transferred to a new company Savant Exploration Ltd. Pacifica shareholders received shares in Savant Exploration as compensation for the transfer of assets from Pacifica to Savant. The agreement was approved on May 31, 2007 and completed on June 6, 2007 at which time control of the Howard's Pass property, commonly referred to as the Selwyn Project was transferred to Selwyn Resources and the charter of Pacifica Resources was cancelled. The company conducted extensive exploration programs in 2007 and 2008 on the Selwyn project but the area around this occurrence does not appear to have received any substantial work.
In mid-2009 Selwyn opened discussions with various companies regarding the formation of a possible strategic partnership. The company announced in Dec/2009 that they had signed a binding Framework Agreement with Yunnan Chihong Zinc & Germanium Company Ltd (China), whereby both companies would form a joint venture company to hold all assets associated with the Selwyn project. In return for a 50% interest in the joint venture Yunnan Chihong deposited 100 million dollars in cash irrevocably to a bank account for the joint venture to use to fund development of the Selwyn project. As part of the agreement Yunnan Chihong agreed to fund all of Selwyn Resources direct costs incurred from July 1, 2009 on the Selwyn project.
On January 5, 2010 Selwyn Resources announced that they had engaged Wardrop Engineering Inc to start a Phase 1 work program leading to the completion of a National Instrument 43-101 compliant feasibility study on the Selwyn project. The company hopes to complete the study by the end of 2010.
On August 18, 2010 Selwyn announced the completion of the joint venture with Yunnan Chihong and the formation of a new company Selwyn Chihong Mining Ltd. Selwyn Resources transferred all Selwyn Project claims, equipment, permits and licenses to the new company. At the same time the joint management committee approved in principal a predevelopment budget of 89 million dollars for 2010 and 2011. The money will be directed to the advancement of permitting, completion of the feasibility study and related engineering and resource definition drilling of various surface and underground deposits.
Capsule Geology
The Selwyn project (Howard’s Pass project) is located in eastern Yukon and straddles the Northwest Territories border, approximately 350 km northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon and approximately 80 km north-northwest of the former mining town of Tungsten. Over ninety percent of the property lies in the Yukon. To date Selwyn Resources Ltd has identified 15 lead-zinc deposits over a strike length of 37.5 km.
This occurrence is located on the west side of the Howard’s Pass (Selwyn project) property approximately 30 km west of the Yukon-Northwest Territories border. Based on historical work by various exploration companies and more recent geological mapping by Expatriate Resources and Pacifica/Selwyn Resources the occurrence is underlain by four stratigraphic units consisting from oldest to youngest of Upper Cambrian and Lower Ordovician Rabbitkettle Formation limestone; the prospective Lower Ordovician to Middle Silurian Duo Lake Formation shales, mudstone and limestone; Lower to Upper Devonian Portrait Lake Formation shale and chert; and Upper Devonian to Middle Mississippian Prevost Formation shale and sandstone.
Zinc-lead mineralization on the Howard’s Pass property is hosted by the Active Member, part of the Duo Lake (or more commonly labelled Howard’s Pass Formation) Formation which lies in the lower half of the Road River Group. Scattered low strength zinc soil geochemical anomalies have been identified over the occurrence area and to the southeast. This area is underlain by the target Duo Lake Formation. Dynasty Exploration outlined a 1.5 square km area centered over the occurrence location which returned numerous anomalous zinc and lead values (up to 3 600 ppm zinc and 210 ppm lead) with coincident copper values (up to 170 ppm). Silt sampling carried out by the Itsi Joint Venture in 1977 just uphill and to the south of the occurrence location returned values of 3 950 ppm zinc and >4 000 ppm lead.
Pacifica/Selwyn Resources has released few results for the area surrounding this occurrence. Based on Selwyn Resources 2009 Resource Estimate Report Update for the Selwyn Project (available on SEDAR) diamond drill holes OPX -014, 015 and 020 returned no significant sulphides (see page 123 of report). Detailed geological mapping and geochemical results have not yet been publicly released for this area.
