WORK HISTORY
The first staking in this vicinity was the Fourth of July cl (477) in Jul/1898. The showings were staked and fringe staked several times until Sep/07 when the Monte Cristo (Lot 20), Jeanette (Lot 41), Alice (Lot 40), Bonanza King No. 2 (Lot 18), Bonanza King No. 1, (Lot 17), Lucky Boy (Lot 19), Centre Star (Lot 39), North Star (Lot 38), Glen Livet (Lot 37), War Eagle (Lot 34), Bunker Hill Copper (Lot 35) and Susie (Lot 36) were recorded.
They were explored under separate ownership until about 1910, when ownership was consolidated under Dr. J.O. Lachapelle, J.P. Guite and J. Viau, who continued development and shipped 5.9 tonnes of ore from the Bonanza King shafts to the Anyox Smelter, located in Granby Bay, British Columbia in 1917. Work ceased in Mar/20, by which time 173.7 m of drifting in 2 adits and two 15 m shafts had been completed on the Bonanza King and a 112.8 m adit had been driven on the adjacent Lucky Boy.
In addition, there is a 12 m adit on the Dawson claim (now lapsed) immediately west of the Bonanza King No. 1; a 2.7 m shaft, 4.1 m of decline and 2.7 m of drifting on the Glen Livet and, a 6.1 m cross-cut on the Bunker Hill claim. The twelve claims were surveyed and taken to lease. These were investigated by Yukon Consolidated Gold Corp in 1943 and were owned by Mrs I. Goulter until her death in 2002. The claims are presently held by Bev Thom, executor of Mrs Goulter's estate.
A. Arsenault and associates optioned the property in 1971 and surrounded the claims (lots) with Billy cl 1-12 (Y61167), cl 31-32 (Y61179), cl 41-42 (Y61181), 17-30 (Y6183) and cl 33-40 (Y61198) in Jul/71 but did not carry out any assessment work.
In Apr/2006 Western Copper Holdings Ltd staked Rem cl 1-14 (YC39221) east and cl 19-35 (YC39239) west of the surviving lots. Later in the exploration season the company carried out a GPS survey to tie the claims to the company’s neighboring Williams Creek project (Minfile Occurrence #115I 008), located to the east.
In Apr/2007 S. Ryan staked Sleep cl 1-12 (YC60122) north of and cl 13-18 (YC60134) south of Rem cl 19-30 (YC39239). The claims were staked under a previously negotiated option agreement with BCGold Corp. Later in the month the company flew a regional airborne magnetic and radiometric geophysical survey over their claims holdings; including the Sleep claims. The Sleep claims were incorporated into BCGold’s WS claim group (Minfile Occurrence #115 007) also optioned from Ryan. BCGold carried out exploration programs on the WS claims and used the assessment credit gained to keep the Sleeper claims in good standing.
In Aug/2007 Minto Explorations Ltd, a subsidiary of Sherwood Copper Corporation, operator of the Minto Mine (Minfile Occurrences #115I 021 & 022), staked Led cl 1-16 (YC65397) around the northern end of the historical lots.
Western Copper Corp staked Hip cl 1-17 (YC65554) in Aug/2007 around the southern end of the historical lots. In 2008 the company soil sampled on the southwest portion of the Hip claims and the northeast portions of the Hip and Rem claims. In Dec/2008 Western Copper Corp transferred the Rem and Hip claims to Carmacks Copper Ltd, a wholly own subsidiary and operator of the Williams Creek deposit (Minfile Occurrence #115I 008) located approximately 6 km to the southwest.
In July 2008 Minto Explorations transferred the Led claims to Northern Tiger Resources Inc as part of a Memoranda of Understanding signed between Sherwood Copper and Firestone Ventures Ltd, the parent company of Northern Tiger Resources. Under this agreement Sherwood Copper vended a 100% interest in four Yukon (Dawson Range) exploration properties and an extensive historical exploration database to Northern Tiger Resources. Sherwood Copper and Northern Tiger also entered into a Regional Exploration Alliance Agreement whereby the companies would provide input and cooperation on planning and executing exploration projects and long term strategies in the area. In return for this assistance Sherwood Copper retained back-in rights to acquire a 65% interest in any of Northern Tigers projects located within a 50 km radius of Sherwood Copper's Minto Mine facilities.
Following acquisition of the Led claims Northern Tiger Resources carried out a small exploration and prospecting program on the claims. In Sep/2008 Sherwood Copper announced that it had entered into a Letter of Agreement with Capstone Mining Corporation to create an intermediate copper producer. The merger was completed on November 24, 2008 resulting in Sherwood Copper being absorbed by Capstone Mining.
In 2009 Northern Tiger Resources flew a regional, low-level magnetic and radiometric geophysical survey over their claim holdings in the region, including the Led claims.
In Apr/2009 BCGold allowed Sleep cl 1-12 to lapse. Sleep cl 13-18 which adjoin the WS claims remained in good standing.
On August 19, 2011 Western Copper Corp announced its intention to spin out several wholly owned subsidiaries into new companies. The Williams Creek property was spun out into Copper North Mining Corp and renamed the Carmacks Copper project.
In Jul/2014 B. Harris restaked the expired Sleeper 1-12 as Koo cl 47-58 (YF46547). At the same Harris also staked fractional claims WCF 8-11 (YF46414) on the northwest boundary of the Koo claims. Koo claims 47-58 are part of a larger block of Koo claims (1-12, 21-44) staked to the northwest. Harris incorporated the Koo and WCF claims into his Stu property (Minfile Occurrence 115I 010), located to the northwest.
In Apr/2014 Northern Tiger Resources merged with Redtail Metals Corp and changed its name to Golden Predator Mining Corp. The new company allowed the Led claims to lapse in Jul/2014.
In Nov/2015 B. Harris restaked the claims as Led cl 1-16 (YE10088) and incorporated them into his neighboring Stu property.
GEOLOGY
The occurrence is located on the northwest side of Williams Creek approximately 1 km southwest of the Yukon River. Access is currently by boat from the Yukon River or by helicopter from staging areas located along the Klondike Highway located approximately 3 km to the east.
Based on a geological compilation released in 2016 by Colpron and others the area straddles the boundary between the Granite Mountain batholith to the west and Povoas volcanics to the east. The Granite Mountain batholith intrudes Yukon-Tanana terrane rocks and in the vicinity of the claims is likely composed of foliated and unfoliated granodiorite of the latest Triassic to Early Jurassic Minto suite. The Hoocheekoo fault separates the batholith from Upper Triassic, Carnian and older (?) Povoas formation augite-phyric andesitic to dacitic volcanic flows and volcaniclastics rocks of the Stikinia terrane.
The occurrence consists of bornite and chalcopyrite in quartz veins and siliceous zones cutting highly altered Upper Triassic Povoas formation of the Stikinia terrane. The veins trend northwest and dip steeply east. The main outcrop on the Bonanza King No. 1 (Lot17), grades 3.29% copper over a 1.8 m width. The drifted vein ranged from 1.5 m to about 10 cm in width. A sample over the 1.5 m width assayed 1.45% copper, 10.3 g/t silver, and 0.69 g/t gold. The smelter shipment averaged 5.26% copper, 66.9 g/t silver and 4.4 g/t gold.
The vein on the former Dawson claim, (lot) is reported to be similarly mineralized with widths ranging from 5 to 45.7 cm. The vein on the War Eagle claim (Lot 34) was reported to be 0.6 m wide and to visually grade 1 to 2% copper. Only traces of copper were located in the Bunker Hill Copper claim (Lot 35) cross-cut.
The Rem claims were staked to provide access along Williams Creek to the Yukon River and the North Klondike Highway located approximately 3 km to the east. The Hip claims were staked to; 1) cover open ground, 2) provide a buffer around the Carmacks Copper deposit (Minfile Occurrence #115I 008) located approximately 6 km to the southwest and 3) to explore for potential mineralization in the Povoas formation volcanic rocks. The 2008 soil sampling program tested for copper mineralization at the granodiorite-volcanic contact and covered Hip claims 1-6 and cl 16-17 and Rem cl 11-13, all located on the west side of the Yukon River. Results showed that areas underlain by the volcanics returned anomalous values up to 5 time’s normal background but no visible mineralization was discovered. It appears the volcanics are naturally enriched in copper compared to the neighbouring granodiorite.
BCGold has released limited information on the Sleep claims. It appears that the airborne magnetic survey outlined a magnetic lineament cutting the eastern end of Sleep cl 13-18. Sleep cl 1-12 were allowed to lapse in Apr/2009.
Prospecting on the Led claims in 2008 by Northern Tiger Resources returned a rock composite grab sample from an old pit that returned 1.74% copper, 0.399 g/t gold and 1.46 g/t silver. Soil sampling outlined a weak coincident copper-gold anomaly from a separate part of the claim block. The airborne geophysical survey identified an unspecified number of targets on the claims.
Copper North Mining Corp has kept the Hip and Rem claims in good standing by grouping the claims with the larger Carmacks Copper property and using assessment work performed on the larger property to meet assessment credit requirements for the Hip and Rem claim blocks.
