Work History
The G-3 Vein was first staked as Spruce cl (15777) by Livingstone Wernecke and transferred to A.L. Major in March 1931. W.J. Langham added Goose, etc cl (15602) in April 1931 and collared a short adit (No. 1) at the 1,188.7 m elevation in the winter of 1932-1933. A. Brown and G. Fairclough staked the adjoining Wild Rose, Theodore, etc cl (15651) in March 1931 and explored with trenching until 1936, when Mount Freegold Yukon Mines Ltd drove a short adit and constructed a 9 tonne mill on the Wild Rose Vein. The Langham, Forrest, Major (Laforma) property was optioned in 1934-1935 by N.A. Timmins Corporation, in 1935-1936 by Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation, and in 1938 by T.C. Richards and E. Keobke who also optioned the nearby Caribou Creek property (MINFILE occurrence 115I 049), from which they moved the 9 tonne mill to the No. 2 adit on the G-3 Vein. In 1939-1940, they milled 1,286 tonnes before dropping the option. Underground development to that point by N.A. Timmins, Yukon Consolidated and Richards et al. consisted of about 366 m in the No. 2 adit level (1,104.9 m elevation) and 213 m in the No. 3 adit level (1,080.5 m elevation) plus several raises. In addition, a 67 m adit was driven on the Alpha Vein.
The property was next investigated in 1946 by Transcontinental Resources Ltd., then optioned in 1951 by Garski Gold Mines Ltd, which carried out limited trenching until 1955. Ormsby Mines Ltd. purchased both the Laforma and Brown-Fairclough groups in 1958, surveyed the claims and took them to lease in 1959. The company explored the G-3 Vein with 633 m of underground drilling and over 762 m of drifting in 1960-1965. This included a new No. 4 adit at the 1,021.1 m elevation, which outlined two ore shoots called the South and North Zones.
Discovery Mines Ltd, formed by the merger of Ormsby Mines Ltd and Consolidated Discovery Yellowknife Mines Ltd., constructed a 113 tonne mill in 1964 but milled only 8,653 tonnes in 1965-1966 before closure due to poor recovery. Discovery conducted a geochemical survey in 1974 and transferred the property to a private company, Botha Lake Mining Corporation in 1975. It was then optioned to Rayrock Mines Ltd. and Ashland Oil Canada Ltd., which drilled 13 holes (998.8 m) later in the year and carried out geochemical surveying in 1975. Esperanza Exploration Ltd. added the Gnat cl 1-102 (YA24934) to the north in August 1979 and optioned the Discovery Mines Ltd. property in February 1980.
The Esperanza interests were acquired in May 1980 by Arctic Red Resources Corporation, which carried out soil geochemical sampling and geological mapping in 1980, rehabilitated the No. 4 level in 1981-1982 and drilled 11 underground holes (944.9 m) beneath the South Zone in 1982. The 1983 program, which was a joint venture with S.J. Resources Corporation (a subsidiary of Ark La Tex Petroleum Corporation), consisted of 222 m of drifting on the No. 4 level, 15 underground holes (1,252.7 m) beneath the North Zone, and continued underground rehabilitation and metallurgical testing.
After the Arctic Red option expired in 1986, the property was optioned by Tally-Ho Exploration Ltd., which commenced a low-level adit late in 1987 in a joint venture with Equity Silver Mines Ltd. Approximately 610 m of the proposed 762 m adit were completed before the program was terminated. Mainstreet Mining put a Miner's lien on the property and acquired the claims in 1989.
In 1993, the property was optioned by Redell Mining Corporation. In 1994, Redell carried out trenching and drilled 23 holes (2,000 m) on the G-3 Zone. In August 1994, Redell optioned the adjoining Antoniuk (MINFILE occurrence 105I 111) and Goldstar and Vindicator (MINFILE occurrence 115I 053 and 115I 052) properties. In April 1995, Nat cl 1(YA86843) and Peggy claims, existing fringe claims, were transferred to Redell.
In 1995, Redell drilled 21 diamond drill holes (2,134 m), trenched and rehabilitated the No. 2 and No. 3 adits on the property. A winterized 20 man camp and concrete pads for a mill building were also constructed. In 1996, Redell constructed a mill on the property and continued underground development and exploration on the G-3 and G-3 extension zones. In June 1996, all work on the mine and adjoining properties was halted when the Vancouver Stock Exchange suspended trading in Redell for failure to provide independent verification of ore reserves at Laforma.
In April 1998, the company re-organized and changed its name to FM Resources Corporation, which carried out soil and rock geochemical sampling, trenching and prospecting in peripheral areas of their combined claim holdings during 1999. In 2000, FM returned 76 of 80 claims comprising the Goldstar/Vindicator properties, located to the west, to their original owners and carried out linecutting later that year and limited geological mapping in 2001 on the Peggy and Ant claims which adjoin the quartz mining leases that encompass the Laforma deposit (this occurrence) and the Antoniuk deposit (MINFILE occurrence 115I 111).
Northern Freegold Resources consolidated the claims in 2006 as part of their Golden Revenue property and performed a property wide VTEM and magnetic airborne survey, including the Laforma deposit.
Triumph Gold acquired Northern Freegold Resources in 2015 and the property that includes the Laforma deposit is now termed the Freegold Mountain Project.
Regional & Property Geology
The occurrence is partly underlain by Yukon-Tanana Terrane (YTT). The rocks of the YTT in this region consist of Early Mississippian metamorphic rocks separated into meta-sedimentary and meta-igneous suites. The meta-sedimentary suite consists of micaceous quartz-feldspar gneiss, schist and quartzite. The meta-igneous package is comprised of biotite-hornblende feldspar gneiss and coarse-grained granodiorite orthogneiss with lesser amphibolite.
The YTT basement rocks are cut by numerous plutonic and volcanic events from the Mesozoic (Murray & Friend, 2018), including:
1. Early Jurassic Long Lake monzonite to syenite plutonic suites;
2. Mid-Cretaceous Mount Nansen Suite andesite to diorite;
3. Mid-Cretaceous Whitehorse granodiorite;
4. Late Cretaceous Casino quartz monzonite;
5. Late Cretaceous Prospector Mountain syenite; and,
6. Quartz feldspar and feldspar hornblende porphyry dykes and plugs.
Mineralization & Results
The Laforma occurrence includes more than ten northeast-trending and steeply northwest-dipping quartz veins cutting complex and strongly altered Mid-Cretaceous Whitehorse suite granodiorite of the Dawson Range plutonic suite (McInnes et al., 1990). The best vein, the G-3, is in a shear zone up to 2.4 m wide and consists of lenses of broken, brownish-stained vein quartz, occasionally grey with finely disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite. Seams of crushed pyrite and occasional arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena, are also present. The gold occurs mainly as fine disseminations of free gold in the quartz. The granitic material in the shear zone is almost completely altered to clay and sericite and the wallrocks exhibit similar alteration (AR 094141; McInnes, 1987).
The G-3 Zone has been explored underground for a length of more than 427 m and through a vertical range of about 300 m. The 1939-1940 production recovered 44,696 grams of Au (exclusive of 47 tonnes of sulphide concentrate). Discovery Mines Ltd. recovered 49,890 grams Au and 17,729 grams Ag in 1965-1966. Reserves were calculated as 62,184 tonnes grading 15.1 g/t Au across a 1.2 m mining width above the No. 4 level after mining ceased in 1966. The 1975 drilling investigated arsenic-gold geochemical anomalies along a faulted extension of the G-3 Vein to the south. This drilling tested the vein for up to 122 m below the No. 4 level.
A detailed study by Redell Mining Corp. indicates the mineralized shear system may be more than 12 metres wide, thereby greatly increasing the reserves. The number 2 level workings have at least a 6 metre width of 12.3 g/t Au uncut and 7.2 g/t cut along a length of 112 metres. Several trenches in the G-3 Zone returned high silver assays, with values of 870 g/t Ag and 2.0 g/t Au over 5 metres, 330 g/t Ag and 2.1 g/t Au over 3 metres, and 370 g/t Ag and 0.68 g/t Au over 13 metres.
The 1994 drilling program returned erratic results. Approximately 50% of the holes returned low or negligible mineralization while the remaining holes returned varying amount of mineralization. Hole 94-17 drilled in the south zone returned 10.5 m grading 47.65 g/t Au. Other significant intersections include 13.7 m (hole 94-6) and 9.8 m (hole 94-10) both of which returned assays of 7.9 g/t Au.
Trenching 100 m west of the G-3 zone produced an assay of 40 g/t Au over a 0.9 m width.
The 1995 drill program returned mineralized intersections of 8.2 g/t Au over 1.8 m in hole 95-10, 20.4 g/t Au over 1.5 m in hole 95-11 and 8.8 g/t Au over 2.1 m in hole 95-12.
