*The occurrence was moved in October 2010, approximately 1.4 km southwest from its previously reported location.
Staked as Gull cl 1-16 (Y70509) and cl 18 -54 (Y70526) in Nov/72 and Dyn cl 1-24 (Y71139) in Dec/72 by Dynasty Explorations Ltd and transferred in 1973 to the Selwyn Project (a joint venture between Dynasty, Atlas Explorations Ltd, Shield Resources Ltd and Numac Oil & Gas Ltd). The joint venture optioned the adjoining Dea cl 1-20 (Y71163) and cl 21-34 (A49901) from Welcome North Mines Ltd and conducted geological mapping and soil sampling in 1973 and 1974.
Grandroy Mines Ltd staked Har cl 1-24 (Y72062) to the north in Dec/72. Also in Dec/72, M. Black staked Cat cl 1-8 (A65777) cl 9-18 (YA65786) and cl 23-25 (YA65799), 6 km to the north in the N.W.T. Black carried out prospecting and soil sampling programs the following year.
In 1974 Shield Resources Ltd changed its name to Precambrian Shield Resources Ltd and Atlas Explorations Ltd changed to Cima Resources Ltd, while Dynasty changed to Cyprus Anvil Mining Corp in 1975. Linecutting was performed on the Gull group in 1977. The Dea claims were optioned to Windmill Enterprises Ltd in 1979.
Restaked within Selwyn cl 1-414 (YC27987) and cl 414-415 (YC28400) in May/2005 by Pacifica Resources Ltd. The company added Selwyn cl 416-439 (YC29223) in Aug/2005, cl 440-535 (YC29327) in Sep/2005 and cl 536 to 793 (YC31510) in Jun/2006. The claims were transferred into the company’s newly optioned Howard’s Pass property and portions were prospected, geologically mapped and rock and soil sampled in 2005 and 2006.
In the summer of 2006 Pacifica Resources collared 1 diamond drill hole (ANE -170 = 221.0 m) on this occurrence. The company also collared 2 diamond drill holes (ANE 161 & 162 = 676.7 m) 1 km northwest of the occurrence and a third diamond drill hole (Don-009 = 193.3 m) 2 km to the east. These holes were part of a larger 191 diamond drill hole (131 550.2 m) program and appear to have been designed to test stratigraphy underlying the northeast side of the Don Valley.
In Jan/2007 Pacifica released a preliminary assessment report for the development of the larger Howard's Pass project. The assessment indicates excellent potential for a long life mine, having large-scale, low cost zinc and lead production. The company used the results to help plan future exploration and engineering work.
On January 29, 2007 Pacifica Resources announced a plan of re-organization in which the Howard's Pass project would be spun off to a new company, Selwyn Resources Ltd and the company's remaining properties would be transferred to a new company Savant Exploration Ltd. Pacifica shareholders received shares in Savant Exploration as compensation for the transfer of assets from Pacifica to Savant. The agreement was approved on May 31, 2007 and completed on June 6, 2007 at which time control of the Howard's Pass property, commonly referred to as the Selwyn Project was transferred to Selwyn Resources and the charter of Pacifica Resources was cancelled.
In 2007 Selwyn Resources drilled 106 diamond drill holes (37 208.6 m) on the Howard’s Pass property. The following year, the company completed 13 diamond drill holes (3 856.9 m) and in 2009 the company completed 10 diamond drill holes (4 214 m). None of the holes were located near this occurrence.
In mid-2009 Selwyn opened discussions with various companies regarding the formation of a possible strategic partnership. In Dec/2009 Selwyn Resources announced that they had signed a binding Framework Agreement with Yunnan Chihong Zinc & Germanium Company Ltd (China), whereby both companies would form a joint venture company to hold all assets associated with the Selwyn project. In return for a 50% interest in the joint venture Yunnan Chihong deposited 100 million dollars in cash irrevocably to a bank account for the joint venture to use to fund development of the Selwyn project. As part of the agreement Yunnan Chihong agreed to fund all of Selwyn Resources direct costs incurred from July 1, 2009 on the Selwyn project.
On January 5, 2010 Selwyn Resources announced that they had engaged Wardrop Engineering Inc to start a Phase 1 work program leading to the completion of a National Instrument 43-101 compliant feasibility study on the Selwyn project. The company hopes to complete the study by the end of 2010.
On August 18, 2010 Selwyn announced the completion of the joint venture with Yunnan Chihong and the formation of a new company Selwyn Chihong Mining Ltd. Selwyn Resources transferred all Selwyn Project claims, equipment, permits and licenses to the new company. At the same time the joint management committee approved in principal a predevelopment budget of 89 million dollars for 2010 and 2011. The money will be directed to the advancement of permitting, completion of the feasibility study and related engineering and resource definition drilling from both surface and underground.
Selwyn Resources has not carried out any significant exploration work in the vicinity of this occurrence since the completion of the 2006 drill holes. The company appears to have used assessment work carried out on other parts of the Howard’s Pass property to fulfill assessment requirements on the Selwyn claims.
Capsule Geology
The Selwyn project (Howard’s Pass project) is located in eastern Yukon and straddles the Northwest Territories border, approximately 350 km northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon and approximately 80 km north-northwest of the former mining town of Tungsten. Over ninety percent of the property lies in the Yukon. To date Selwyn Resources Ltd has identified 15 lead-zinc deposits over a strike length of 37.5 km.
The Gull occurrence is located north of the approximate mid-point of Selwyn Resources’ mineralized belt. Outcrop is scarce over much of the area. Geological mapping carried out by Dynasty Explorations suggests the property is underlain by Upper Cambrian to Lower Ordovician Rabbitkettle Formation limestone that is overlain by Ordovician to Middle Silurian Road River Group mudstones and black shales. Dynasty believed the two main units were separated by a “transitional” dolomite (limestone ?) unit. Prospecting carried out by Dynasty uncovered some black shale float (presumed to be Road River Formation) in the west-central portion of the claim block.
Detailed soil sampling outlined a 915 m long by 245 m linear lead soil anomaly trending about north 20 degrees east and centred along the southern half of the Gull claims. The peak value in this zone is 1 150 ppm lead. The occurrence location marks the approximate center point of this anomaly. Northeast of the main anomaly, a second more irregular shaped lead anomaly also trending north 20 degrees and measuring approximately 610 m long by 60 to 180 m wide was identified. Although Dynasty theorized that the anomalies were likely sourced by mineralized black shales, an actual source was never identified.
The Dea claims were located 2 km east of the Gull claims and are underlain by the same stratigraphy. Prospecting failed to locate any mineralized outcrops and soil sampling outlined a few lead, zinc and copper spot highs within black shaly limestone.
The Cat claims were located entirely within the Northwest Territories. The area is mostly overburden covered with occasional exposures of Devonian aged black shale and argillite likely belonging to the Earn Group. Soil sampling outlined four weak lead and zinc anomalies which were thought to be caused by metal accumulation in swampy ground.
Selwyn Resources has not yet released geological maps for the area surrounding this occurrence. Diamond drill hole ANE - 170 collared just north of the occurrence and diamond drill holes ANE - 161 & 166 were completed as part of a fill-in drilling program designed to confirm and upgrade the resource estimate for the Anniv East deposit (Minfile Occurrence 105I 037). None of the three holes intersected the Active Member. Hole Don - 009 collared 2 km to the east appears to have been drilled to test for mineralization 2 km north of the Don deposit (Minfile Occurrence 105I 068). The hole intersected 21.9 m of Active Member but did not return any significant sulphide mineralization.
Successful intersection of lead - zinc mineralization to the south, i.e. the Don Valley corridor led Selwyn Resources to concentrate their resources on known areas of mineralization. Areas located outside the known mineralized corridor, such as the area surrounding this occurrence were left for future exploration programs when the company would have more time and money to devote to them.
As of Sep/2010 the entire Howard’s Pass property (consisting of 15 individual deposits) hosts an indicated resource (using a 2% zinc cut-off) of 154 350 000 tonnes grading 5.35% zinc and 1.86% lead and an inferred resource of 234 150 000 tonnes grading 4.54% zinc and 1.41% lead.
