Work History
The earliest record of work in this area is 1913 when shafting was carried out in two places near what is now the Cowley Park deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105D 053). Little activity followed for half a century until Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co Ltd staked Sue cl 1-4 (75653) 1.3 km south of the eventual location of this occurrence in Apr/61. The occurrence itself was first staked in Mar/65 by Buchanan Mines Ltd as Mike cl 1-10 (91807) and Linda cl 1-4 (91815) which were sold to Alice Lake Mines Ltd, later in the year. Alice Lake built a road and carried out trenching in 1965, magnetic and IP surveying in 1966 to 1968. In 1970, Alice Lake carried out grid geochemical surveying and drilled 11 holes (652.6 m).
The occurrence was restaked as Doug cl 1-4 (YA82612) in Jul/84 by P. Percival and as Bull cl 1-3 (YB58141) by R. Hamel in Aug/95. Hamel staked Luc cl 1-8 (YB58057) 2 km to the south in the same month. In Aug/96 Hamel added Bull cl 4-10 (YB66651) to his holdings. Hamel restaked the Luc claims as Luc cl 1-8 (YB96292) in Sept/96 and staked Luc cl 9-27 (YB96300) through the fall of 1996. In Dec/96 the Luc claims were transferred to Norwest Enterprises Inc, which carried out trenching (156 m) in 1997.
In Sep/97 B. Ernewein surrounded the occurrence with Toro cl 1-6 (YC08184) and carried out geochemical (rock and soil) sampling the following year. Hamel staked Ehyu cl 1-6 (YC08319) 2.5 km to the east in Oct/97.
The occurrence was restaked as Cowley cl 1-5 (YC08540) by J. Coyne in Feb/98. In May/98, Hudson Bay transferred 100% of its interest in the Sue claims to Lobo del Norte Ltd (a private company controlled by Ernewein) which carried out rock geochemical sampling later in the year. In Nov/98, Coyne and Norwest carried out HLEM and magnetic geophysical surveying of the southeast corner of the Luc claims and in Jul/2001, Hamel restaked the Sue claims as CP cl 1-4 (YC19316).
Capsule Geology
Overburden cover in the area is extensive, drilling has indicated that the occurrence is underlain by quartz diorite and granodiorite. Geochemical sampling revealed a weak copper anomaly on the west side of the property while IP response was flat. Minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite and molybdenite and traces of bornite, native copper and cuprite were logged in holes M7, M8 and M9.
Trenching to the south on the Luc claims exposed hornblende diorite of the mid-Cretaceous aged Whitehorse Pluton near the contact with Triassic Lewes River Hancock member carbonates and calcareous siltstones. Limonitic soils were noted in areas where epidote-rich calc-silicate skarns have formed at or near the contact. The skarn is locally slightly magnetic and contains aggregates of rusty brown weathering pyrite. Results of chip and grab samples collected from the trenches were not available at the time of reporting and were not filed for assessment.
Sampling of soils and carbonate rock by Ernewein on the Toro claims returned gold values below detection. Grab samples of mineralized calc-silicate and garnet skarn from the Sue claims returned values up to 39 589 ppm Cu, 2 258 ppm Mo and 687 ppb Au in the area identified as a potential open pit site (Minfile Occurrence #105D 053, Cowley Park deposit).
Geophysical surveying of the Luc claims located a couple of east-west striking magnetic trends, several isolated magnetic anomalies and two steeply dipping HLEM conductors. The HLEM conductors adjacent to the southern magnetic trend were interpreted as possibly representing nonconductive skarn mineralization.
