Work History
The Prince cl 1-10 (75752) were staked 1.5 km east of the occurrence location in Jun/61 by H. Versluce and C. Gibbons and transferred to New Imperial Mines Ltd in 1966.
The occurrence itself was staked as Wing cl (Y31018) in Mar/69 by W. Travers and optioned by Pyramid Mining Company Ltd, which drilled one hole (121.9 m) in October that year.
New Imperial Mines Ltd carried out geophysical surveying on the Prince claims in 1968 and 1971. In Oct/71 New Imperial changed its name to Whitehorse Copper Mines Ltd and in Oct/89 the company amalgamated with Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. Aurora Gold Ltd later optioned the Prince and other claims in the McIntyre Creek valley from Hudson Bay and carried out geophysical surveying and drilled 7 rotary-percussion holes (849.8 m) approximately 5 km to the south-southeast in 1990.
H. Coyne and Sons Ltd restaked the area as Gin cl 1-28 (YC08842) in Jul/98 and carried out machine trenching in the McIntyre Creek valley, 1.5 to 4 km south-southeast of the occurrence location later that year. In 1999, the company staked Gin cl 29-34 (YC18021) contiguously to the east and the west of the original claims and drilled 2 holes (279.2 m) 300 and 600 m east of the occurrence location on the Gin cl 29 and 10, respectively.
In Feb/2005, Auterra Ventures Inc entered into an option agreement with H. Coyne and Sons Ltd to acquire a 100% interest in 9 mining leases, 18 crown granted mineral claims and approximately 200 mineral claims covering most of the historic Whitehorse Copper Belt. The majority of these claims, except those noted above, where acquired by Coyne in 1998 from Hudson Bay. Auterra subsequently changed it name to Global Hunter Corporation.
Capsule Geology
The area which is covered by deep overburden, occurs close to the contact between Upper Triassic Lewes River Group sediments of the Aksala Formation and the Whitehorse Batholith, a Cretaceous aged biotite-hornblende quartz monzonite to granodiorite intrusive. The Lewes River Group is composed of the Mandana Member calcareous and dolomitic siltstone, sandstone and mudstone; pyritic siltstone; sandstone, argillite, Hancock Member limestone, dolomite and fragmental rock. Within the Whitehorse Copper Belt dolomitic units generally host magnetite-sepentine skarns, with red to brown garnet, bornite greater than chalcopyrite and valleriite. Calcareous units host magnetite-free wollastonite skarns with beige to yellow garnet, chalcopyrite greater than bornite and molybdenite.
The Wing claims were staked to cover an airborne magnetometer anomaly in an overburden covered area. The 1969 drill hole, which the owners claimed was drilled parallel to the hillside, failed to reach bedrock and the cause of the magnetic anomaly was never determined.
Only the most southerly trench (#3) from the 1998 program reached bedrock, exposing relatively fresh Hancock Member limestone. All other trenches bottomed in glacial till. Drilling the following year on Gin cl 29 (DDH Gin-1) intersected the contact between limestone and granodiorite and included 20.42 m of exoskarn and 0.3 m of endoskarn. Copper mineralization was well developed in the top 2.5 m of the exoskarn, averaging 10.97% Cu and 0.157 g/t Au. The rest of the skarn zone was generally less mineralized, containing about 0.5% Cu, although a 0.3 m interval did return 5.38% Cu and 0.125 g/t Au. The second drill hole, DDH Gin-2, collared on Gin cl 10 was drilled through 68.6 m of overburden, followed by a thick sequence (45 m) of basalt (likely Upper Triassic Povoas Formation) and 19.7 m of unconsolidated sediments before terminating in granodiorite.
