Work History
Staked as Mike cl 1-32 (Y18840) in Jul/67 by Trans Western Investments Ltd and optioned by Tremar Minerals Ltd and Weland Mining Ltd (later Welland Consolidated Mining Ltd), which performed linecutting, a mag survey, road building and drilled one hole (153.6 m) in the winter of 1967-68. The Man cl 1-16 (Y24784) were staked about 1.6 km to the northeast in May/68 by Ambassador Mines Ltd, which flew an airborne magnetic-EM-radiometric survey in June/68. After the option lapsed, the claims were re-optioned by Dawood Mines Ltd, which carried out an IP survey in Jul/70. Restaked as WE cl 19-34 and 35Fr-39Fr (Y66018) between Dec/71 and Mar/72 by Whitehorse Copper Mines Ltd, which carried out a soil geochemical and I.P. survey in Oct/73 and drilled one hole (132 m) in Mar/74.
The area east and north of the occurrence was restaked as Hat cl 1-20 (YB57537) by R. Hamel in May/95. The occurence was restaked in Aug/95 as Cat cl 1-2 (YB58133) by I. Elash and N. Barnett who also staked Cat cl 3-6 (YB58135) 2 km to the north. Hamel staked Hat cl 21 - 36 (YB58021) in the same month. In Sep/95, Elash/Barnett added Cat cl 7-20 (YB58170) to their claim holdings. Later in the same month S. McKeown staked DM cl 1-8 (YB66726) on the southern boundary of the Cat claims and carried out prospecting and trenching in 1996 and 1997. In Nov/95 Hamel staked Hat cl 37-40 (YB66395) on the northwest side of the Hat claims. Elash staked Cat 21-24 (YB66816) in May/96 and carried out prospecting in 1996 and 1997.
In Jan/96 the Hat cl 1-40 were transferred to Norwest Enterprises Inc who later partnered with Kluane Drilling Ltd, which had earlier acquired, from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd, the Bornite cl 1-2 (73783) and Zircon cl 2 and 4 (64183 and 74157) which adjoin the southeast corner of the Hat claim block. Kluane Drilling, acting as operator for the project, then carried out trenching and channel sampling in 1998 and 1999 and completed an I.P. survey and drilled two holes (357.2 m) in 2000 on the south central part of the claim block.
In Oc/99, McKeown staked DM cl 11-12 (YC18200) contiguously to the south of his existing DM claims in the area. McKeown drilled 3 percussion holes (5.5 m) on DM cl 8 and excavated a large granodiorite boulder from DM cl 11 in 2000.
Kluane Drilling and Norwest Enterprises staked Hat cl 41-44 (YC18449) in Feb/2000, Hat cl 45-46 (YC18695) in May/2000 and Hat cl 47-48 (YC18853) in Aug/2000, contiguous with the west , east and south sides of the claim block, respectively. The partners drilled 3 holes (611.12 m) in 2001 and two holes (434.15 m) in 2002.
Capsule Geology
Staked to cover an areomagnetic anomaly on the Geological Survey of Canada map. The occurrence covers the contact between Cretaceous biotite granite and Upper Triassic Lewes River group sedimentary rocks and lies at the north end of the Whitehorse Copper Belt along strike from the War Eagle pit.
The Ambassador airborne survey located a number of magnetic and EM anomalies. Minor malachite, bornite and magnetite were found by prospecting in the area of one of the magnetic anomalies. Float samples collected in 1973 returned up to 3% Cu, but only weakly anomalous sedimentary rocks were intersected during drill testing of an I.P. anomaly the following year.
Trenching and grab sampling of a gossanous skarn zone near the intrusive contact on the DM claims returned highly anomalous values, with peak values of 18% Cu and 1 827 ppb Au. Samples collected in 2000 during percussion drilling on the DM claims were subsequently lost or misplaced and planned analysis of this material could not be completed. The granodiorite boulder excavated on the claims that year was removed to be cut at a local shop.
Work from 1998 to 2000 on the Hat claims identified narrow, parallel bands of mineralized limestone skarn in trenches approximately 1 km east-northeast of the War Eagle pit which returned >1% Cu and 1 g/t Au over widths of 2 to 5 m. Drilling (hole HT-1) in the area of one of the trenches intersected high-grade copper-gold skarn mineralization with the best intersection returning 4.99% Cu, 1.05g/t Au and 40.3 g/t Ag over 10.6 m.
In 2001, hole HT-3 was drilled to scissor the mineralization intersected the previous year in hole HT-1 and encountered well developed exoskarn zones, locally with granodiortie dikes. Small scattered zones of mineralization consisting of disseminated chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite were intersected, but were not considered significant. Hole HT-4, drilled at right angles to the HT-1 and 3 section, cut the section approximately 23 m above the mineralized zone encountered in 2000 and returned 2.9 m of mineralized skarn grading 3.12% Cu, 359 ppb Au and 13.8 ppm Ag.
Further to the north, approximately 1.2 km north-northeast of the War Eagle pit, hole HT-5 was drilled to test an I.P. chargeability anomaly identified during work in 2000. The hole was drilled entirely within granodiorite that contains scattered quartz-(calcite)-chalcopyrite-(bornite) bearing veinlets with disseminated chalcopyrite halos. The veinlets, mostly <1 cm thick, are best developed within the section between 91.4 and 170.7 m down hole, with an average density of 2-3 veinlets per 1.5 m and locally as high as 2-3 veinlets per 0.3 m. Anomalous copper with locally elevated gold values occur throughout the section. The best copper mineralization occurs over a 1.37 m interval starting at 99.4 m down hole, assays of which returned 1.02% Cu, 560 ppb Au and 11.2 ppm Ag. The best gold mineralization occurs over a 0.98 m interval starting at 145.9 m down hole that returned 1.76 g/t Au with 0.54% Cu and 4.4 ppm Ag from a section containing three quartz-chalcopyrite-bornite veinlets with a few fine chalcopyrite stringers.
Drilling in 2002 continued to test the I.P. chargeability anomaly north-northeast of the War Eagle pit. Hole HT-6, drilled 106.7 m west of HT-5, intesected skarn and skarnified sediments and narrower widths of intrusive rock. Narrow intervals of copper mineralization consisting of disseminated and fracture fillings or veinlets of chalcopyrite were encountered. Hole HT-7, drilled aproximately 250 m south of HT-6, intersected granodiorite intercalated with skarn before ending in granodiorite. The granodiorite is at times weakly altered with fractures locally containing 1 to 2 % chalcopyrite. Disseminated chalcopyrite, occasionally with minor bornite is reported in some of the skarn sections. Analysis of core from the upper section of this hole returned an average of 0.74% Cu over 31.15 m, with the best 1.5 m interval grading 1.84% Cu, 365 ppb Au and 21.2 ppm Ag.
