Abstract

This GIS dataset is a Yukon-wide compilation of surficial geology polygons derived from 15 published and unpublished 1:20,000 and 1:25,000 scale surficial geology maps produced by the Yukon Geological Survey and City of Whitehorse. All polygon map unit labels have been converted to standardized map unit labels, based on the British Columbia terrain classification system. Standardized attributes include: surficial material, texture, age, surface expression and geomorphological processes.

Capsule

The fifteen 1:20,000 and 1:25,000 scale surficial geology maps included in this compilation were either digitized from scanned hard copies or converted from various digital formats where available. See PDF map depicting extent of compilation coverage (pink and orange areas). The original map source for each feature is identified in the “ORIGNL_MAP” field. Eleven of the fifteen maps were originally published by the Yukon Geological Survey for the Anvil Range (105K) area (Bond, 1999). Three additional maps were also published by YGS for the communities of Mayo, Pelly Crossing and Burwash Landing/Destruction Bay (Kennedy, 2011, 2013). One unpublished map is included for the City of Whitehorse (Mougeot, 1997).
 
The two key attribute fields within the polygon dataset are “LABEL” (map unit as published on the original map) and “LABEL_FNL” (standardized map unit, following the BC terrain classification system. The rest of the fields are derived from splitting the LABEL_FNL map unit into up to 4 different components (A,B,C,D) with up to three different geomorphological processes, textures and surface expression modifiers for each component. Terrain classification codes are defined in the following file: “Yukon_surficial_geol_codes.xls”. Detailed polygon field descriptions can be found in the following file: “Yukon_surficial_polygon_attributes.xls”.
 
Please note that because polygon geometry was captured as reflected on the original maps, polygon edges may not match across adjacent mapsheets published by different authors.
 
These data are a valuable resource for a variety of applications, including: mineral and placer exploration, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure planning, granular resource/aggregate assessments, permafrost modeling, agricultural assessments, forest management and biophysical or ecological land classification.
 
This dataset will be updated as new surficial geology mapping is completed in the territory (e.g. three new maps for the communities of Dawson, Faro and Ross River are expected to be incorporated into this compilation by the end of 2014). Any errors noted by the user of this data should be promptly reported to the Yukon Geological Survey.
